It is believed that Surya and Chandra Dev had revealed the distinction of Rahu-Ketu, i.e., Swarabhanu, to Lord Vishnu, so the enemy Rahu-Ketu curses these two by taking an eclipse to take revenge.
Sutak period during Lunar Eclipse
The inauspicious period starts before the lunar eclipse starts, this is according to astronomy, and this inauspicious period is called the Sutak period. During this period, any auspicious work should be avoided. The Sutak period starts 3 hours before the start of the lunar eclipse, i.e., 9 hours before. The real story of Rahu-Ketu's existence
It is believed that Rahu was a monster named Swarabhanu. After the Ksheer Sagar churning, Lord Vishnu, in Mohini's form, was distributing nectars in Mahakali forest to the deities; Swarabhanu suspected that Lord Vishnu is cheating the demons then he disguised himself as a deity and sat with the Sun and the Moon. But before he could take a drop of nectar down his throat, the Sun and Moon got to know the truth of Swarabhanu. So they revealed his secret and informed Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu, after hearing the truth, immediately separated Swarbhanu's head from his torso with his Sudarshan Chakra but due to the nectar's consumption of the head and the torso became immortal. Later the head came to be known as Rahu, and the torso is called Ketu. This story tells that Brahma Ji connected the head to the body of a snake, this body is called Rahu, and his torso was joined to the head of the snake, which is called Ketu. According to mythology, Rahu became the enemy of these two gods because Swarabhanu's secret was revealed by the Sun and Moon to Lord Vishnu.
Story of Lunar Eclipse
In ancient times there was a demon named Swarnabhanu. Swarbhanu took part in the churning of nectars, which was taking place in the ocean. Then a dispute arose between the Dev and the demons. When the nectar came out from the ocean's churning, there was a dispute between Dev and the demons over the nectar. In such a situation, Lord Vishnu took Mohini's form on the day of Mohini Ekadashi and started distributing nectar among the deities. Sitting in the line of demons, Swarbhanu recognized Vishnu, who was distributing nectar in the form of Mohini, and thought that Lord Vishnu is cheating the demons, so Swarbhanu disguised him as a deity at the same time and sat in the queue of the Gods.
Lord Vishnu treated him as a god and made him drink nectar. Surya and Chandra, sitting with the deities, recognized Swarbhanu in the form of a deity, and they informed this to Lord Vishnu, who was in the form of Mohini. After hearing this, Srihari separated Swarabhanu's head from the torso with his Sudarshan Chakra before the nectar descended from Swarbhanu's throat. Swarbhanu's head had taken Amritpan, so his head became immortal.
As Sun and Moon have informed Lord Vishnu about the depletion done by Swarabhanu in order to consume the nectar, therefore Rahu and Ketu hate the Sun and the Moon and make the Moon groan on the full Moon, hence cause the occurrence of a lunar eclipse.
Precautions are taken during a Lunar Eclipse
No auspicious work should be done during the eclipse. Add basil leaves to food before starting the lunar eclipse, and during the eclipse, basil leaves should not be touched. During the eclipse, one should read religious and inspirational books; reading them will remove negative energy from you. Along with this, the negative effects of an eclipse can also be avoided by chanting mantras. One should not cook during the eclipse and also avoid eating food. Both cooking and eating are considered inauspicious during the eclipse.
